India won the Twenty20 World Cup title by beating South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling final on Saturday 29 June, ending India's 13-year wait for the title.
The contest between the two unbeaten teams of the tournament lived up to expectations and saw a lot of drama, ending with India winning the T20 World Cup for the second time in 17 years.
This was the first time South Africa made it to the final of a World Cup in any format, but Aiden Markram's side missed out on the title.
India's Jasprit Bumrah, who was named Player of the Tournament, He bowled at an economy rate of 4 in the entire tournament, performed particularly well and once again proved why he is the best bowler in the world across all formats.
It was India's first global win since winning the 2013 Champions Trophy and the first time a team had won the title while remaining undefeated throughout the tournament.
In a topsy-turvy final, India scored 176-7 thanks to Virat Kohli's 76, Aksar Patel's 31-ball 47 and Shivam Dube's 16-ball 27, but Heinrich Klaasen's 52 off 27 balls helped South Africa recover from a poor start and cruise to victory. Virat Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Match.
However, Bumrah returned to the attack and when South Africa needed 16 runs off the final over, Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning boundary catch to dismiss David Miller.
Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20 internationals after the match and India coach Rahul Dravid shook the trophy and cried in a rare display of emotion at the end of his tenure at the helm of the national team. India won their second T20 World Cup but it was their first world title in 13 years.
The disappointment was mounting. In the last 12 months, India lost the World Test Championship final and, most difficult of all, the 50-over World Cup final on home soil.
