180-degree shift in Washington’s policy toward El Salvador’s president Bukele.

It is a quiet, 180-degree shift in Washington’s policy toward the tiny Central American nation of 6 million, reflecting how the Biden administration’s criticisms of Bukele’s forceful governing style have been overtaken by more urgent concerns over immigration — a key issue in this year’s U.S. presidential election.

El Salvador’s president sworn in on Saturday A high-level delegation led by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and senior White House and State Department officials attended Bukele’s swearing-in ceremony for a second term in San Salvador on Saturday.

Bukele, 42, who was re-elected with 85% of the vote, has been hugely popular at home for his frontal crackdown on powerful gangs that has transformed the country, once the world’s murder capital, into one of Latin America’s safest countries.  The improvement in public safety is attributed to a more than 60% drop in migration from the Central American country to the US since Bukele took office in 2019 - this is in contrast to the growing exodus of migrants from other parts of Latin America.

Earlier, the Biden administration was a rival of El Salvador's President Bukele on many issues and he was heavily criticized. He was accused of forcibly expanding opposition parties and trying to eliminate the opposition, harming democracy, such serious allegations were made, but the way El Salvador has progressed in the last 5 years and has controlled the gangs is commendable and now Bukele has promised that his main goal in the next term will be to completely strengthen the economy of Salvador. The way migration from Central America to other nations was happening, it has now reduced significantly, which has affected the public a lot and his main goal for the next 5 years will be to strengthen the economy of El Salvador by developing and implementing new plans.
