Conservative Party led by Rishi Sunak suffers a crushing defeat in the United Kingdom general election. Keir Starmer set to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The defeat of Rishi Sunak's party will end 14 years of tumultuous Conservative government. Although many results of Thursday's vote are still to be announced, the left-wing Labour Party has now won more than 326 of the 650 seats in Parliament, and according to an exit poll it will get 406 to 412 seats.
Keir Starmer's left-wing Labour Party is expected to get a huge majority in the parliamentary election, which will make him the next Prime Minister of Britain, while Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party has won only 70 seats so far.
The Labour Party has returned to power for the first time since Gordon Brown's tenure in 2010.
After winning his seat in London, Starmer said, "Tonight the people here and across the country have spoken and they are ready for change, they want an end to the politics of protest, and they want to bring politics back as public service." "Change starts here... You have voted. Now it's time for us to act.
After the defeat of the Conservative party, Rishi Sunak said that "today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with the goodwill of all parties." "There is a lot to learn and reflect on and I take responsibility for the defeat of many good hardworking Conservative candidates... I am sorry."
Starmer, a former barrister who entered Parliament in 2015 and has pulled his party towards the centre since taking over as leader in 2020, has pledged to revive Britain's weakening public services while keeping a tight rein on spending. Counting of votes will continue till night. The results will be declared on Friday.
