Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian became the new President of the Islamic Republic of Iran .

Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian has won the election against his hardline rival Saeed Jalili. Pezeshkian won the second round of elections with 53.7 percent of the vote.

Addressing the people of Iran after the victory, Pezeshkian also praised the relatively high voter turnout in Friday's elections. He praised the people for their awareness of the election process and promised to listen to the voice of the Iranian people and "fulfill all the promises" he made. Let me tell you that he got a huge vote in this decisive victory.

According to the official count, Pezeshkian, considered a centrist and reformist candidate, received about 16.4 million votes out of a total of more than 30 million votes, while Jalili received about 13.5 million votes.

Pezeshkian is expected to take charge within 30 days. Since he is still a member of parliament from Tabriz, the body will first vote on his resignation.  The country's ninth elected president will be officially approved by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a ceremony, after which he will be sworn in by parliament.

What does Iran expect from the new president?

Pezeshkian is expected to ease tensions over stalled talks with major world powers to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and improve prospects for social liberalization in Iran.

Pezeshkian promised to revive the economy, which has suffered from mismanagement and sanctions, which Iran's economy has been hit hard due to sanctions re-imposed after the then United States President Donald Trump unilaterally canceled the nuclear deal in 2018.

Pezeshkian is a liberal and centralist leader and he also promised to give a lot of relaxation in the matter of women's rights, so it is expected that now women in Iran will get some relaxation in the right to drive and the right to hijab.
